Self Care Plan of Action

Happy New Year 2012!  We all have our resolutions in place stating we will lose weight, be healthy and exercise. For this new year have a plan.

Well, what happens to this plan?  It is often derailed by ourselves.  We are in charge of us. But we use the eternal excuses such as: "I work so late; I cannot make a proper meal" or "I will wait until my children are in school".

Well, the excuses are our mind keeping us within our comfort zone. We want change but are worried to take action and make something of our plan. We tend to be worried about changes.

The person in charge of this change is you: no one else. If you want to see results that will be everlasting for better health, vitality and optimum wellness recognize you are in charge of you.

Start small, make easy simple changes.  Swap one unhealthy habit for a healthy one.  Replace drinking soda, with water. If you want flavor in your water squeeze in some lemon, or lime juice.

Eat fresh fruit, cut up vegetables for a healthy satisfying snack.

When you make dinner put some away in a container for work the following day.

Take action, have a plan and get started. Success in life starts with you!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! - the new year always gives us that "clean slate" we get to start over, fresh, clean start.

Our new year's resolution "I am going to lose that 10 pounds". Well, every new year with new intentions.  I have an easy simple 5 step plan of action to get you on your way to optimum health.

1.  Swap one unhealthy choice with a healthy one.  For example, instead of drinking a sugared soda, replace it with water.  Bring a reusalbe bottle to drink out of during the day.  If you desire some flavor in your drink., squeeze in some lemon or lime to give you a nice clean fresh zesty taste.  I know there are many flavorings on the market but they may contain artificial ingredients, added sugars, that add calories to your diet.

2.  There are many festive events this holiday season, office parties, family events.
Bring something to the event.  A dish that you can share with everyone.

3.   Bring in a portable container a healthy snack.  Such as whole wheat crackers, unsalted sunlflower seeds., low fat cheese.  So, you have a healthy item with you and you are less tempted to spend money at the office vending machine.  This also adds up to money spent on unhealthy fare.  Here is a way to see how much you were spending on this., have a jar at home and fill it with the money you would have spent on the vending machine food.  After a month, see what it totals up to and you will be surprised to find how much you saved. This money can now to be used to buy something special for yourself.

4.   You can also do this with the lunch for the office.  Bring a meal from home. When you prepare your evening dinner., portion off some of it and take it to work.  This is also save you time and money buying lunch from the local eatery. The money saved will add up and you will again see how much you saved.  Not just money, but you saved your health and well being by not buying food prepared on the outside.

5.  And as for the resoultion to be fit and healthy.  There are many ways to begin. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Bring sneakers with you to work and walk to the office.  You can also organize a walking group with your coworkers.

Your health is precious.  When you have your health you have wealth.  My grandfather said this.

Health is your most important assest.  When I hear that spending money on healthy food is too expensive or I am too tired to excersice. Well, what is more expensive?  Spending the money on healthy fare, being fit and well? Or spending money on doctor's visits, pills, surgery?

The answer is clear., your health to be here for the ones you love and need you., and for yourself.

To all of you., have a joyous, happy healthy, wonderful new year!.

Emotional Eating:

2.  Relationships?

3.  Food being subsituted for low self esteem, anxiety, nervousness.

4.  Blaming others for bringing unhealthy foods into the house.

5.   Oh, I will lose weight after the holidays or I will start my diet on Monday.

All these factors and more contribute to unhealthy eating habits and more excuses for eating unhealthy.

Today is Love your body day!

Today is love your body day.  To truly appreciate all that our wonderful  bodies do for us. But it seems that we seem to be more critical than appreciative of the wonderful body that we posses.

Your body is your home.  When you treat your body with love, respect, proper foods it will return the favor in kind with health and wellness.  If you treat yourself to unhealthy foods, lack of excersice your body will respond with a variety of aliments from lower back pain to digestive issues.

Magazines, television and other media show us body images that are unattainable; from fashion models, movie stars and other celebrities with perfect fiqures and faces.  They come out with suggestions for diets, excercise programs and even gym equipment for the us to buy. Well these plans and equipment soon is left in the dust after we are bored or disappointed with the lack of results.

Everyone is different and that is what makes all of us unique and amazing. To appreciate the body we have, the legs that carry us, our arms to hold and hug our loved ones.  Our bodies are a treasure that we need to nuture and love.

Self Care

ShareWhat is self care?  Taking the time to do something just for you.  How do you priortize self care? What do you do to be healthy?

Are you doing things that give you a zest for life? Or are you doing things that are draining on you both physically, mentally and emotionally?

If you have a list of things to do and it is more than ten items, try delegating the tasks at hand.

Have someone help with some of things you have to do., such as picking up someone from an activity.  Or making the evening meal.

Practicing self care is essential for your body, mind and spirit.  It helps you be a better person all around. When you take the time to care for you - you are better at handling life's challenges.

If you are not able to this can lead to stress, anger, or anixiety issues. Your health and well being are your most important asset.

For instance, is there a class you always wanted to take?  Or a club that you wanted to join?  A book you always wanted to read?

Stressors that take drain your energy are harmful to our health and well being. Take the time for self care.

Let's email together and let me know what steps you take for self care.

Body Image Talk

I was invited to talk to my daughter's journalism class about body images. I began by showing photos of Twiggy, Cher, and Audrey Heburn. These iconic women were the ones we attempted to emulate.

We discussed what influences them and they are wonderful in their thoughts about themselves and their peers. They all agreed that if you are not happy in your own skin with  confidence and self esteem there is the issue of how you feel about yourself.

One girl in the class is a dancer and she says that the only girls she knows that are really thin are ballet dancers. She is a very confident young lady and she does not care what anyone says about her.  Being a dancer makes you strong and fit.

I also showed photos from a Muscle Man magazine and the reaction was a mixture of surprise from the students. Everyone, even the boys, were amazed at the images of these body builders. One boy said he works out to be strong and healthy but would never use any stimulants to be strong.  We also looked at a women's health magazine and the articles ranged from how to have perfect abs to blast fat. Everyone agreed that the images of what a perfect women should look like are very biased and not true to the facts. Everyone comes in all shapes and sizes.  But unfortunantly, the magazines and televisions shows refuse to acknowledge this fact of life.

As a yoga teacher, I receive a promient magazine, Yoga Journal, the only people they show are models: perfect people doing the postures.  The founding fathers of yoga where ordinary men,and if they show a photo of them, it's only a head shot.
We also discussed the reality shows about plastic surgery. And we all agreed that if you do this it's still you - regardless and you still have to keep up the Botox.

We all age but in this day and age growing older gracefully is unacceptable.

Body Images

Body Images effect everyone.  If you look at any magazine whether it's for men or women; there's always a model on the cover telling you how they got their "ripped abs" "how they lost weight" or "how to get massive muscle".  I was recently at my local market when I wandered into the magazine section.

Staring at me where magazines that had every type of body image.  Body builders who are so overly muscular they lack flexiblity due to their overly muscular body mass.  Women with perfect fiqures smiling at you saying "you can look like me to" What they neglect to explain is these individuals spend 8 to 10 hours doing fitness.    The average person according the the ACSM (American college of Sports Medicine) needs at least 20 to 30 minutes of any type of aerobic activity.

We have lives, jobs, families and other obligations. Throughout our times there have been a variety of body images from super models, to pop stars, with perfect fiqures.

Well, another fact they forget to mention, they have ways, means, time and money to spend on trainers and other outlets so they can maintain themselves.  We have been duped into thinking we can resemble that perfect body shape.  Yoga Journal had an online article about "Being Happy In Your Own Skin". Well Yoga Journal should "practice what they preach" All their pefect shapes completing the postures. Yoga is for "Every Body" the founding fathers of yoga where average men, they were not fashion models. Yoga is a practice that everyone can enjoy doing it does not matter what your size or shape is. Consant judgements, comparisions are determentail to our self esteem. When we are constantly thinking we are not good enough.

If we are truly willing to let go of these stereotypes it has to start at home.  Our parents, teachers, the people in our lives have to express their happiness, joy and give those around them encouragement to be ourselves to be content with  our relationships.  I saw a T-shirt in a store that said; "Be Yourself, Everyone Else Is Taken"

10 Easy Steps for Relaxation

Hello everyone! With our busy lifestyles it can be difficult to find the time to relax.  Here are ten easy ways to fit instant relaxation into your daily routine:

1.  Sitting down crossed legged on the floor, sitting up straight. Place one hand on your abdomen and exhale then inhale through your nose expanding your diaphragm outward like a ballon. Do this 8 times. Breathing in and out of your nose. Then relax, with your arms down on your legs, close your eyes and breath normally.

2. At times we tend to have stress in our shoulders.  Sitting in your crossed legged position, roll your shoulders up, forward and down eight times.  Then reverse. Roll your shoulders up, back and down. Breathing in and out of your nose.

3.  For your neck muscles, move your head down so your chin is on your chest then back and parallel to the floor. Then roll your head slowly in a clockwise position, then counter clock wise, do this at least 5 times both ways.Slowly lift your head to center. Close your eyes and breath in and out of your nose.

4.  This next relaxation is for your eyes. Again, sitting up straight moving only your eyes, look to the right, left, right then left.  Do this 4 times.  Then look up then down, again 4 times.  Take a moment to breath in and out of your nose closing your eyes. Then open your eyes and look up at the right corner, left corner, repeat this from the left corner to the lower right corner. Next, rub your palms together creating friction and cup your hands over your eyes sending energy there.  Then slowly, gently, stroke your fingers over your eyes.

5. Take a few moments to mediate.  Play a relaxing CD of calming music, sit crossed legged, close your eyes, and breath in and out of your nose.  You can do this for 10 minutes. This really brings you back, revitalizing your energies so you can take on your day.

6. Take a walk outside in the fresh air to clear your thoughts; it's wonderful exercise.

7. Stretching to loosen up tight muscles. Stand up straight, arms upward clasping your hands with index fingers extended, lean to the right, lengthening as you lean, then back to center. Lean to the left. Every time you lean it's an extension, exanding your intercoastal muscles that assist us with our breathing.

8. Take time for yourself whatever the acivity walking, gardening, cooking, or reading a good book.  All these give you the time to enjoy the things you like doing.

9.  Get enough rest.  Our bodies need to rejuvenate after our busy day with at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep.

10. Write your thoughts in a journal.

Hydration: Drink Water

WATER:
  • revitalizes our body's cells
  • plays a vital role in our bodily functions
  • is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and chemcial reactions
  • is essential to remove toxins, removing waste from the body digestive tract.

Being dehydrated may lead to chronic celluar dehydration causing a weakend physical state

It is recommended to have a least 8 glasses of water a day.  If you like having some flavor in your water, lemon or lime slices are a tasty cirtus treat without using any artificial sweetners.  You can also use sprigs of mint.

Being happy in your own skin

I recently received an email from "Yoga Journal" magazine. This particular article was entitled Being Happy In Your Own Skin. It talked about accepting yourself and treating yourself with love and respect.

"Yoga Journal" is obviously selling magazines.  In business logic, this means they show only people with perfect fiqures on the cover and within the pages. Whenever they have a photo of the founding fathers of yoga they only do a head shot.  The founding fathers of yoga where ordinary people.  They were not fashion models.  When I see the photos among these pages I see that "Yoga Journal" should practice what they preach.  Yoga is for everyone of all shapes and sizes.  As a teacher sometimes clients feel intimated by these images believing they have to look like a perfect model to take a class.  If we really want to "be happy in our own skin" it has to start with us. We all need to be change we want to be.

Can you squeeze me in?

Lately I have seen so many ways we can "squeeze" into our clothes.  Every catalog I get in the mail has one way or another to lift our butts, cince our waist, firm our thighs, or massage our legs with instant massaging action fibers.  Way back when, women had corsets that squeezed their waists lines so they fainted.

I bought one of these so called figure flattering contraptions just to see if it really was all it was cracked up to be.  Well, after struggling to get into it, I looked like I was wearing a sausage casing.  It was very uncomfortable. Although it made me a look a little bit slimmer it was not by much.

In our instant-want-it-now culture, no wonder these items fly off the shelves.  It's like a magicians trick; now you see it, now you don't.  There are even jeans which lift and tuck with other added features to give us the illusion that we so desperately want to believe. We have been fed the notion since we were little girls that if you look like a princess and have a perfect fiqure then love and acceptance  is yours.

We're told to be ourselves and love who we are,  but this is blatant mixed messages when magazines flaunt fashion models with impossible figures and tell us what we can do to achieve such beauty. What is not told is these people have resources the average person does not have.  "To thine known self be true," was Shakespeare's immortal words.  These are truly words to live by.

"I am Woman"

"I am woman, hear me roar in numbers too big to ignore!"

That was the Woman's anthem from singer Helen Reddy.  We all sang along, proud, strong and fearless.  Well, ladies, it's 2011 and for sometime now I have not heard even a whimper on anything positive with woman's rights.

The Equal Rights Amendment disappeared off the face of the earth and I think if you asked anyone if they even remember it they would be hard pressed to do so.

Where are women now?

What strides have we made?

We still deal with many issues.  Body image, comparisons, feelings of inadequacy.

Where are the role models today?  So many of them are reality TV stars who put forth the image that if you act stupid, dress provocatively, drink, speak with foul language, you can get anything you want.  This image of what a woman should be is detrimental to today's youth. Reality stars are not stars nor are they role models.

Women today need positive images to aspire to, that will lead a neo-feminist movement and revive the spirit of Woman's Rights.

The Zen in All of Us

Finding that inner peace within all of us can be rather daunting.

We have so much to do with work, family, friends and various obligations.

Taking a few moments just to relax and breath.

When we relax its rejuvenating to our body, mind and spirit.

Being present taking a moment to clear our minds of the daily clutter.

In the spirit of this holiday season, I wish all of you, peace, joy, and abundance of good health and happiness.

Just Breathe

With all there is to do this holiday season, and any other time when you have so much to do, remember to breathe.

Here is a simple easy way to de-stress:

1.  Sit in your chair, forearms on your thighs palms facing up, sitting up straight, close your eyes and breath in through your nose and out through your nose.  Do this for five complete breaths.

2.  If you are at home sit comfortably on the floor crossed legs arms on your thighs with palms up sitting straight close your eyes and breathe in through your nose and out through your nose. Do this also for five complete breaths

Self Image

Don't be led by the culture:

We are constantly bombarded with body images from television ads to magazines.
I was recently watching a show on the E! channel and the makeover contestant was introduced with her new look.  The hostess of the show said to the contestant's young daughter, "Doesn't your mom look like a Barbie?" I found that statement to be interesting. What is she saying: that you have to look like a Barbie to be socially acceptable, that no one will care about you or you won't have self worth?

I saw a new show about Plastic Surgery.  It's for Brides getting married.  What does this one have to say: That on your special day you are not going to be loved or wanted by your new husband if you don't have a perfect body?  The images, and messges that are being touted by the industry today are wrong, hurtful and harmful to every woman despite her age.

Send me your thoughts on the subject.

Let's replace the constrictive cultural images of beauty with a new, more healthy image.
